Abstract

In 104 pts (16 males and 88 females - m.a.: 45,2 yrs) who were operated on for a single thyroid nodule during 1 year (1986-87), the histological findings (final diagnosis) was correlated with the preoperatίve scanning appearrance of the nodule (Tc-99m.). From those 73 nodules which were considerated as «cold» 10 (13.6%) were malignant (4 papillary, 2 follicular, 3 mixed and 1 undifferentiated carcinomas) and 63 (86.4%) benign (32/73 or 44% follicular adenomas, 29/73 or 40% nodular hyperplasias and 2/73 or 2.4% thyreoidites). From those 31 nodules which were considered as «hot» 5 (16%) were malignant (all follicular carcinomas) and 26 (84%) benign (19/31 or 61% follicular adenomas and 7/31 or 23% thyreoidites). 33.3% of the carcinomas and 30% of the benign nodules were found to be «hot» scintigraphically (N/S, Ρ = 0.74515). The incidence of the follicular carcinomas as «hot» nodules in comparison with that of follicular adenomas and nodular hyperplasias was statistically found to be higher than the expected value (Ρ = 1.7531 x 10^-2). Ιt is concluded that, in the series, the possibility of a «hot» nodule to be a carcinoma was the same or even higher than that of a «cold» nodule and that benign adenomas have more changes to be «cold» than «hot» scintigraphically.
