Abstract

Because of the controversial bibliographic data a study of prolactin, as well as gonadotropic hormones levels in epileptic patients' serum following a partial or generalized seizure is attempted in this paper. Prolactin and gonadotropic hormones levels in the serum of 14 epileptic patients (5 male, 9 female) were studied both postictally (within 2 hours after the occurance of the seiruze) and interictally using immunofluorescent methods. (Three of them had temporal seizures, 3 termoral with secondary generalization, 1 psychomotor with secondary generalization and 7 grand mal seizures). It has been found that 8 out of the patients showed increased prolactin but normal LH-FSH levels postically. Serum prolactin level is not an accurate method of diagnosing epileptic seizures. There is possibly an influence either of the particular anticonvolsive medication, or the duration of the seizure.
