NUCLEOLAR ORGANIZER REGIONS ΙΝ LIVER ΒΙΟΡSΥ SPECIMENS
Abstract
The modified silver colloid technique for nucleolar organizer regions (AgNORs) was applied to a series of 35 liver biopsies. These comprised 5 specimens of normal liver, 10 with cirrhosis and 20 with hepatocellular carcinoma. AgNORs, seen in tissue sections as discrete black dots, were in higher numbers in liver - cell carcinomas than in normal and cirrhotic livers. These differences were significant statistically. Furthermore, normal and benign liver cells contained AgNORs which were tightly clustered into nucleoli; in contrast, malignant cells showed dispersal of AgNORs throughout the nucleus. Our findings underline the potential value of this technique in diagnostic liver pathology.References
