ISCHAEMIC NECROSIS OF ΤΗΕ LARGE BOWEL COMBINED WITH SIMULTANEOUS MASSIVE UPPER GASTROINTESTINAL HAEMORRHAGE IN ELDER PATIENTS
Abstract
Two cases of massive upper gastrointestinal haemorrhage combined with simultaneous ischaemic necrosis of the large bowel are presented. The uncommon coexistence of these two life-threatening conditions could be attributed to a) maskedly decreased colonic blood perfusion as a result of the severe hypovolaemia, and b) to the toxic effect on the bowel wall of the profound bacteria flora of the colon. The possible pathophysiological mechanismus involved in these cases are analysed and a review of the relevant literature is attempted.References
