Study of Social Values of Participants in Dance Activities by Social Class

A significant number of individuals in our country participate in recreational activities such as dance. Knowledge regarding the social classes and social values of participants in dance organizations is limited and, in most cases, empirical. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the social class of participants in dance activities within dance organizations differentiates the factors of social values. The sample consisted of 1,563 adult men and women from dance organizations across Greece, who were randomly selected. The classification of social classes into Upper (or dominant), Middle, and Working class was based on the distinction proposed by Bourdieu (1979). Data on the social values of participants in dance activities were collected using the questionnaire developed by Yavrimí, Zisi, and Petra (2017), which examines four factors of social values: immigrant integration, meritocracy–transparency, environmental awareness, and democracy. All responses were given on a 5-point Likert scale. To examine whether social class differentiates the values of the four social value factors, a one-way analysis of variance (One-Way ANOVA) and Bonferroni multiple comparison tests were conducted. Statistically significant differences were found in the values of three factors. Specifically, for the factor “Immigrant Integration,” the Middle class (M = 3.14, SD = 1.15) showed statistically significant differences compared to the Upper (or dominant) class (M = 2.71, SD = 1.14) and the Working class (M = 2.82, SD = 1.17). For the factor “Meritocracy–Transparency,” the Working class (M = 2.50, SD = 0.96) showed statistically significant differences compared to the Upper (or dominant) class (M = 2.28, SD = 1.07). For the factor “Democracy,” the Middle class (M = 3.20, SD = 1.22) showed statistically significant differences compared to the Working class (M = 3.44, SD = 1.13). In conclusion, the findings of the study highlight the importance of social class as a factor that significantly differentiates the social values of participants in dance activities. Participants belonging to different social classes exhibit different social values.
