Application of Video Analysis in the Evaluation of Technical and Tactical Performance in Team and Individual Sports

The evaluation of athletic performance is a complex process that requires specialized tools and methodologies. Video analysis is a fundamental tool for decoding the technical-tactical behavior of athletes, offering crucial information for training planning and competition preparation. The field of video analysis has developed significant expertise in the field of athletic performance, expanding the scope of its research beyond traditional sports. Below are presented indicative scientific studies carried out at the Physical Education and Sports Laboratory of the Department of Physical Education and Sports Science (DPESS), Democritus University of Thrace (DUTH). These studies concern the recording and analysis of technical-tactical behavior in both conventional sports, such as football, and in less conventional ones for video analysis, such as combat sports (e.g., Taekwondo) and climbing. The main objective is to present the observation methodologies/protocols and the findings resulting from these studies, thus highlighting the contribution of video analysis to enhancing knowledge and practical application in these specialized fields. These studies found that, regardless of the specificity of the sports, the structure of the observation protocols has a common basis, with their content being adapted to the regulations of each sport. The findings that emerged are considered important, as is their practical application. Specifically, in football, targeted training in pressure and high-risk conditions is recommended to avoid injuries and in specific technical elements. In climbing, it is recommended to choose smaller and more difficult handholds, use large support bases, and keep the climber's torso facing the wall during his or her attempt. Finally, in the case of Taekwondo, the federation's belief that the change in regulations is made with the safety of athletes in mind was overturned, as the corresponding research showed an increase in blows to the head and chest.
