SURGICAL MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE PANCREATITTIS
Abstract
Twenty-two patients, 14 women (63.3%) and 8 men (36.4%), with acute pancreatitis were operated upon in the Surgical Department of Didimotichon General Hospital from September 1986 until August 1989. According to Ranson's early signs of severity all were high risk patients. They underwent surgical exploration either because they presented as having acute abdomen or because they were known to have acute pancreatitis but their clinical condition remained unchanged despite the strong conservative management. lt was due to gallstone disease in 17/22 patients (77.3%), postoperative after gastrectomy in 2/22 cases (9.2%), once idiopathic, once alcoholic and once hyperlipidemic (4.5%). Five patients (22.7%) died postoperatively and 18 (81.8%) were variously complicated. The mortality is high in serious forms of acute pencreatitis despite the strong management but in mild cases prognosis remains better.References
