Το σύνολο σχεδόν των ρευματικών παθήσεων προσβάλλει την καρδιακή λειτουργία (προσβολή μιας ή περισσοτέρων ανατομικών κατασκευών της καρδιάς, π.χ. περικαρδίτιδα, μυοκαρδίτιδα, βλάβη των καρδιακών βαλβίδων, διαταραχές του ρυθμού κλπ.). Ιδιαίτερα σημαντική από κλινική άποψη είναι η προσβολή της ρευματοειδούς αρθρίτιδας (ιδιαίτερα των καρδιακών βαλβίδων), του συστηματικού ερυθηματώδους λύκου (ιδιαίτερα μυοκαρδίτιδα, προσβολή στεφανιαίων ή ανάπτυξη πνευμονικής υπέρτασης), του σκληροδέρματος (ιδιαίτερα μυοκαρδίτιδα), της πολυμυοσίτιδας (ιδιαίτερα μυοκαρδίτιδα), της νόσου Kawasaki (ανάπτυξη μικροανευρυσμάτων των στεφανιαίων αγγείων), καθώς και της αρτηριίτιδας Jakayasu (ανεύρυσμα αορτής).
