Abstract

Plasma Viscosity and lipids levels were measured in 32 healthy nuns of a Christian Orthodox Monastery during the usually diet and after long fasting. As controls has been used 32 healthy women of comparable age. The median value of plasma viscosity levels decreased significantly from 1,500 cps duήng regular diet to 1,416 after fasting. Of statistical sίfnificance was also the decreace in the values of total cholesterol from 193 to 163, of LDL from 119 to 93, of triglycerids from 56 to 30 and HDL also from 58 to 51 mg%. Compared with the controls the nuns had always lower values of plasma viscosity, LDL and triglycerids and higher HDL values. It is concluded that the vegetarian and semi-vegetarian diet, as this one of the Christian Orthodox Monasteries, is associated with a favourable effect οn plasma viscosity and lipoproteins levels.
