Abstract

The aim οf this study was to determine the plasma viscosity levels in patients with urinary tract infection and to evaluate this variable as a possible diagnostic tool in differenfiating between upper and lower urinary tract infections. We measured plasma viscosity using a capillary viscometer at 25° C in 41 patients with urinary tract infection: 19 with upper and 21 patients with lower urinary tract infection. Plasma viscosity was also measured in 38 age matched healthy controls. The mean value ± 1SD of plasma viscosity in cP was: In patients with urinary tract infection: 1.565 ± 0.116. In patients with upper urinary tract infection: 1.565 ± 0.116 In patients with lower urinary tract infection: 1.698 ± 0.124 In controls: 1.516 ± 0.088 The plasma viscosity was significantly higher in patients with upper urinary tract infection compared to controls (p=0.000019). Patients with upper urinary tract infection had higher values of plasma viscosity than patients with lower urinary tract infection (p=0.01). The latter finding may be useful in indentifying the site οf urinary tract infection.
