Twenty-three cases of histologically favorable nephroblastomas and adjacent renal tissues were immunostained using the avidin-biotinylated horseradish peroxidase method and a polyclonal rabbit anti-Heat shock protein 70 antibody which reacts with both the constitutive and the inducible form. Immunohistochemistry revealed HSP 70 expression in 19 out of the 23 cases of nephroblastomas, with fourteen cases showing low, four cases moderate and one case high expression. Also 19 out of the 23 cases of nephroblastomas showed decreased HSP 70 expression compared with that occuring in the adjacent renal tissues. From the remaining four cases, one case showed increased and three cases showed equal HSP-70 expression with the adjacent renal tissues. Ιη conclusion in the present study we offer immunohistochemical data which show: a) that the HSPs-70 are expressed in nephroblastoma cells and b) that the HSPs-70 tumor expression is lower compared to HSP-70 expression in the adjacent renal tissues.
