Α REVIEW ΟΝ ΤΗΕ BIOLOGIC PROPERTIES OF CERTAIN FATTY ACIDS AND THEIR DERIVATIVES ΙΝ ONCOLOGY
Abstract
Cancer chemotherapy can "cure" 15-20% of all malignancies, and is selflimiting due to its high morbility profile. Most οf the new chemotherapeutic drugs developed today are derivatives of existing ones, and usually have the same spectrum of adverse effects. Αn urgent search for more potent, target specific and less toxic substances is required. In this reνiew we analysed the reported cytotoxic/static as well as cytoprotective effects of certain bioactive lipids, and found that a variety of malignancies are indeed inhibited by these substances, and that certain adνersities deriving from conventional treatment methods are overcome by certain substances. All reported substances are displayed on the table. We concluded that the clinical administration of readily available bioactive fatty acids and their derivatives is urgently required in controlled clinical studies.References
