THE CORRELATION BETWEEN ADMISSION DIAGNOSIS AND MORBIDITY - MORTALITY IN A MIXED I.C.U.
Abstract
Although the overall rate of morbidity and mortality in a mixed I.C.U. is high, it obviously must be closely correlated with the cause of admission and/or the underlying primary disease. Ιn order to differentiate the corresponding correlation this study was carried out by retrospectively analysing the findings from a consecutive series of 236 patients admitted to the I.C.U. during a 3-year period (1990-92). It was found that although the I.C.U. acquired overall morbidity was only 5%, there was a wide discrepancy (3-30%) of morbidity depending mainly upon the cause of admission and already axisting at the time of admission. As far as the mortality is concerned it was found that although the overall mortality rate was 19%, there was a wide range of death rate (0-72 %) varying according to the underlying primary disease and not the cause of admission, the highest following neurologic irreversible disorders and severe cerebrocranial injuries.References
