Abstract

Α series of 74 endometrial adenocarcinomas was investigated for the presence οf argyrophilia by the Grimelius technique. Argyrophil cells were detected in 39 cases (52.7%). Adenocarcinomas of the endometrium containing argyrophil cells had clinical and pathological features similar to ordinary endometrial adenocarcinomas. However, prognosis, in terms of 5-year survival, was appreciably higher in patients whose neoplasms contained argyrophil cells compared to those whose neoplasms were devoid of such cells. These findings indicate that endometrial neoplasms with argyrophil cells are not a separate clinical or pathological entity, but their distinction from other forms οf endometrial adenocarcinoma is useful because of a different biological behaviour.
