Abstract

Open fractures of the limbs consist a major problem, because of their high incidence of complications. Problems emerge from their therapy and from the functional restoration of the limb as well. In our department, during a four years period (1989-1992) we treated 19 open fractures grade ΙΙΙ according to Gustilo & Anderson in 16 patients, with surgical debridement an external fixation. The problems concerning union of these fractures, residual functionality and early postoperative complications, oblige us to confirm the general acceptance of circumspection about prognosis of these injuries, because of the bad functional result of the injured limbs. We also conclude that there is an impressive refusal of these patients in undergoing a new remedial operation, after the fracture has united.
