The effect of exergames in cardiopulmonary capacity and subjective vitality of young adults

Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to investigate the effect of exergame «Wii Nintendo Sports» on the physiological parameters, and on the psychological parameters of young adults. In present study volunteered twenty (N = 20) students of the School of Physical Education and Sport Science of Democritus University of Thrace, aged 20 to 25 years old. The participants were randomly divided into two groups, the experimental (N = 10) and control group (N = 10). The experimental group used as a training method the digital interactive exercise games of Wii Nintendo Sports, while the control group did not participate in any training method. The experimental group followed an exercise program of 10 weeks on the console, with three sessions per week and 30 minutes’ duration per session. The participants were examined in body weight, body mass index, body fat, maximum oxygen uptake, maximum heart rate and subjective vitality, before and after the intervention program. The results of the present study revealed that, regardless of whether it was experimental or control group, there was a statistically significant reduction only in body fat between initial and final measurement (F1,17 = 11.715, p = 0.003 <0.05). However, regarding all the other parameters were not found any significant differences between initial and final measurements in both groups (experimental and control group). In conclusion, it was found no statistically significant improvement on the parameters of both physical, and psychological status of the participants.
