Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate literature on issues concerning the training of Physical Education teachers. In particular, this research focused on the characteristics and structural elements of the training programs, the views of the teachers on the nature of the training aimed at their professional development, their training needs and also the difficulties they face in terms of their training. The search was carried out in Google Scholar, Scopus, JSTOR, ProQuest and DeepDyve and finally 28 studies were selected based on their publication year which was chosen to be from 2000 onwards, the language of writing which was limited to Greek and English, and the sample which was limited in Physical Education Teachers (PETs) but also teachers who teach the course abroad. The results of the bibliographic review highlighted the value of training for the teaching readiness of PETs and the need for targeted training programs. Training programs should be designed according to the specific needs of PETs and the challenges they face, including issues related to content knowledge, pedagogical skills, student behavior management and technology, and be based on best practices, according to research data. Finally, the review highlights the importance of collaboration, peer mentoring, and continuous professional development. These findings could provide significant information for the design and the revision of PETs training actions.
