Otto Rehhagel was born on August 9, 1938 in Essen, Germany. He is a veteran footballer and a distinguished coach in the Bundesliga. He started out as a footballer at his hometown club TuS Helene Altenessen in 1948, before moving to the city's big club Rot-Weiss Essen, for whom he played from 1960 until 1963. After the start of the Bundesliga , in the 1963/64 season, he played for Hertha Berlin (1963-1965) and FC Kaiserslautern (1966-1972). During his career he played in a total of 201 Bundesliga matches, while as a defender he was known for his tough play. He is one of two Germans who, combined as a player and as a coach, has participated in over 1000 matches in the German Bundesliga.
