Abstract

The purpose of the present study was to determine the effectiveness of a program of core stabilization exercises (Pilates) in proprioception of the lower limbs of healthy students. Additionally, the effect of the program was tested on muscle strength, endurance, joint position sense and function of lower limbs. The research involved 38 students of Physical Education School of Democritus University of Thrace, with mean age 20 ± 1 years, who were randomly assigned to the intervention (n = 19) and control (n = 19) group. The intervention group performed a program of stabilization exercises of the trunk 12 sessions for 3 consecutive weeks. Measurements were obtained at the beginning and end of the study on proprioception (via Biodex Stability System), sense position of the knee, the force of the extensor and flexor knee (through isokinetic dynamometer Cybex 6000), muscle strength knee joint (execution tousingle squat test), and functional ability (performance jump in length and triple jump). For the statistical analysis of the results were used analysis of variance ANOVA repeated measures. The results showed improved proprioceptive ability after application of the core stabilization exercise program (Pilates) (p < .05). Similarly, improvements were observed in the parameters of position sense, muscle strength and function (p < .05) of both limbs. In conclusion, core stabilization exercises using the Pilates method indirectly improve proprioception, the position sense, durability and functionality of the legs.
