The effect of training with inertial devices on sports performance and injury prevention
Abstract
Training with inertial devices is one of the most modern training methods of lower limbs. Exercises with these devices are based on the moment of inertia of the discs and the speed of the movement. When performing the exercise, high power and strength values are produced, causing significant changes on lower limbs. The purpose of this scoping review was to investigate the effect of training with such devices on the function of the lower limb muscles concerning sports performance and injury prevention. According to the findings of the review, it was observed that training with flywheel devices increase significant the strength, power and hypertrophy of the lower limb muscles. This training method seems to be beneficial in improving athletic performance, enhancing the ability of vertical jump, sprinting speed at 10 and 20 meters and change of direction ability. Training programs using inertial device of 6 - 8 weeks duration with a frequency of 2 - 3 times a week are ideal to improve parameters of physical performance. In conclusion, training with flywheel devices is an effective way of exercise, causing significant changes in lower limb muscle function and thus reducing the occurrence of injuries.References
