The effect of dramatization on the learning of the volleyball set skill and life skills development in primary school children

Abstract

The purpose of this research was to examine whether the technique of dramatization will have a positive effect on learning the skill of setting in volleyball and on the development of life skills, in children of the 3rd grade of the primary school. The participants were 94 students (boys and girls), aged 8-9 years (MO=8.07, TA=.828). The participants had not been taught volleyball at all. The students were randomly divided into two groups, the Dramatization Group (ODP, N=48) and the control group (OE, N=46). The research was carried out in the school premises during the physical education lessons, lasted four weeks with two teaching units per week and was carried out in the month of November. During the implementation of the intervention program, the experimental group (ODP) was taught the skill of setting and academic subjects using the dramatization method, while the control group (OE) was taught the same skills and subjects with the standard way of teaching the physical education course and according to with the detailed program. Bartlett, Smith, Davis and Peel's (1991) setting test, modified for children's age, was used to assess skills. The initial assessment measurement was done before the implementation of the intervention program, the final measurement followed soon after the implementation of the intervention and the retention measurement 2 weeks after the final measurement. During the intervention students were not exposed to additional volleyball skills.  The measurement process was videotaped to assess the quality/technique of the set skill, after examining the intra-rater and inter-rater reliability. The assessment of life skills was done by completing the questionnaire by the students at the end of the intervention program. Analysis of variance with repeated measures showed that dramatists had better results in learning and retention the pass skill and in developing life skills. In conclusion, the use of dramatization is a useful tool in the PE course, to achieve its objectives.
